Majid al-Futtaim's first hypermarket in Tehran becomes hit
attraction as thousands flock to store -paper.
Iranians are flocking in their thousands to Tehran’s first major hypermarket opened by Dubai-based Majid al-Futtaim Group (MAF) to enjoy a different shopping experience than offered by traditional bazaars, the UK's Financial Times reported on Tuesday.
There were no advertisements but the crowds have been pulled in by word of mouth since the store opened in a middle-class area in August, the newspaper said, adding that MAF has invested $60 million in its ventures.
MAF holds the Middle East franchisee for French retailer Carrefour but the Tehran hypermarket has been opened under the Hyperstar brand.
The hypermarket offers several top Western consumer brands and cuisine to Iranians, who are big spenders in neighboring Dubai’s glitzy shopping malls.
MAF plans to open 15 Hyperstar branches by 2015 in five cities, including in two more in central Tehran and the southern city of Shiraz next year, the Financial Times reported.
